צָפַד(b. h.; cmp. צָפַף) 1) to be pressed; to cleave. Pesik. R. s. 37, beg. וצ׳ עורך על עצמךוכ׳ thy skin was cleaving to thy bones, and thy body was as dry 2) to press, contract. Y.Yeb.XVI, 15d top (read:) והכירוהו שצְפַדְתּוֹ הצינה (Var. שצרפתו) they identified the drowned man, for the cold had contracted him (preserved his features). Y.Pes.II, end, 29c החומץ צוֹפְדָן vinegar contracts them (Bab. ib. 40a צומתן), v. צָמַת. Y.Ter.X, beg.47a עדשים צוֹפְדוֹת אותו שלא יבלע the thick mass of lentils presses it (the onion) so that it cannot absorb (the taste of the lentil water); שלא יתן so that it cannot communicate its taste; ib. IX, beg.46c צופרות (corr. acc.).

R. to III, 9 המן … בע׳ גדולהוכ׳ Haman, the wicked, came with great trickery against Israel (tempting them to sin). Ib. באו בע׳וכ׳ they (the Israelites) came with a pretext, saying, let us go to sacrifice (Ex. 5:3). Pesik. R. s. 26 ראה היאך תמצא לו ע׳וכ׳ see how thou canst find a charge against Jeremiah and be revenged on him; a. fr.Pl. as ab. Ex. R. l. c., v. עָוַת. Num.
